Building a successful website isn’t easy, but there’s so much more involved than just visuals and contact forms. That’s why I’m going to explain why copywriting for websites is so important, and why it’s one of the first worthwhile investments you’ll make as an entrepreneur…
If you run a business of any kind, you most likely (and should) have a website. We’ve tumbled into the digital age, so it doesn’t matter whether you’re a local plumber or a horseshoe artist, an online presence is all but critical for business.
But even if you have a website that looks beautiful, if the copy isn’t written effectively, you’re in trouble. I know you’ve heard of things like SEO keywords, and that’s usually the first thing that comes to mind for business owners and entrepreneurs when they think about what makes a website rank well and drives business.
However, keywords, while definitely important, are not the only factor (or even the more important) factor in what helps a website build traffic. So let’s talk about the true heavy-hitter…

Why Is Strategic Copywriting For Websites So Important?
Having well-written copy on your website not only makes you look super professional, but it greatly improves the website visitor’s experience while browsing your site.
People are VERY quick to pass judgment, and someone will decide in less than 10 seconds whether or not they’re willing to stay on your website. Harsh, I know, but that’s why copywriting for websites is vital.
Here are some happy little bullet points that cover why copy is critical
- Awesome Copy Grabs Attention And Keeps It
- Effective Copy Assures That Your Website Visitors Understand And Enjoy Navigating Your Site
- Empathetic Copy Knows How To Speak Authentically To Your Visitor & Provide Solutions To Their Problems
- Authentic Copy Maintains A Consistent Brand Voice That Makes Viewers Trust Your Website
GREAT Copywriting will do ALL OF THIS at once…
How Does Copywriting Improve Website SEO?
When people think of SEO, they usually only think about keywords. One of the most counter-intuitive things you can do to your website is “keyword stuff”. Keyword-stuffing is when you try to fit as many keywords into a webpage as possible. While someone might think this will improve their ranking in search results, it can actually make it worse.
This is because there are many more factors to SEO than just keywords, and one of the main ones is readability. When you keyword stuff, you’re sacrificing the fluidity and flow of your website copy. If people are just accosted by a huge wall of text that lacks authenticity and is hard to read… they’re just going to leave.
Google will notice that and punish you for it.
When you implement strategic copywriting for websites, you’re able to implement highly-targeted keywords (no more than 1-3 per page), and provide your website visitors with a pleasant viewing experience that establishes you as the professional they want to work with.
More bullets about how copywriting helps with SEO
- Improves Readability, keeping people on your website for longer sessions
- Uses keywords in a way that compliments your writing without keyword-stuffing
- Improves UX (user-experience) because your webpages are clear, concise, and provide direction on what to do next
- (and lots more)
Should You Hire Someone To Handle Copywriting For Websites?
Usually, I try to provide some DIY tips… However, when it comes to your website, I EMPHATICALLY recommend that you hire a professional copywriter. Website copywriting is a specialized skill, and copywriters spend a LONG TIME mastering it.
Hiring a professional copywriter to handle your website copy will be well worth the investment. Bad copy kills a website, and trying to learn can how to write copy is a real hassle. Especially when you’re running your own business and don’t have a lot of time.
If you’ve hired a website developer, they will- most likely- have a copywriter in their network they can recommend. Same with graphic designers. Creative service providers usually keep catalogs of trusted references we can share with clients.
Here are some website tips you can implement to help before hiring a copywriter
- Start a blog (here’s my free guide again) and post consistently.
- Make sure you’re posting regularly to your social media platforms
- Use an SEO tool like Yoast to help improve your SEO score
- Ask around in FB Groups for Copywriter recommendations
Your website is like an employee. In fact, your website is a salesman who works 24/7 to talk about how amazing your business is. And good salesmen are clever, charming, articulate, and know exactly what to say and what not to say.
They understand your customers, and they know how to help them.
THAT’S what effective copywriting for websites is: the compelling voice of your website helping your business outshine the competition.
It’s YOUR voice.
A professional copywriter knows exactly how to bring it all together and make your site the most effective and authentic representation of your business.
